I recently came across an article about the involvement of Hispanic children and sports. I was perplex with the information found in this article. Based on this article Hispanic children spent a significant amount of time indoors compare to their Caucasian counterparts. They attribute this to latino family compositions and family finances. Hispanic children enjoy playing video games and watching TV shows, they are not involved in after-school or weekend sport activities. Compare to Caucasian and Asian children that are involved in swimming, basketball, soccer, football, dance, flag football and many others sports that now cater to kids.
For single working moms, trying to find the time to provide their children with these activities is tough. Decisions have to be made between cleaning the house on the weekends or taking Johnny to Basketball. Deciding if both of the kids do sports or only one, due to timing and finances.
Then the next question comes along, what about me. Mami needs time too. Latina moms like many moms out there work 9-5 jobs, pick kids up at aftercare or daycare, cook dinner, help their kids with homework and get ready for the next day to start all over again. Then if we add to the equation birthday parties, play dates, doctor visits, etc; where does the Mami time go.
After reading this article I made the conscious decision to sign up my son for basketball on Saturdays. Is good for him to start enjoying sports and outside activities. Now I need to learn the game of basketball to be part of the new section of my life "basketball mom".

WakeUp! NYC an extra support for Latina moms
WakeUp! NYC is a multimedia campaign that was created to support families and provide students with a bit of excitement in the mornings before they go off to school. The Task Force is composed of a group of well known TV and radio networks like Viacom, BET Networks, Hot 97 and Kiss FM. This multimedia campaign involves receiving automated inspirational wake up calls from celebrities like Magic Johnson, Trey Songz, Terence and Rosci, Jose Reyes, and many others. The wake-up calls urges school attendance that day and every day there is school in session. Students will also receive absence alerts when student attendance is not improving. This program went citywide on spring 2011 and reaches thousands of students and families every school day.
My 11 year old son enjoys receiving these calls. The calls are very motivational and great morning conversation starters. In stead of having boring alarm clocks, these calls make my mornings easier. As a working mom, anything that supports my morning routines a give it an A+.

Currently, each State has a separate set of education
standards, the lists of skills that students should be able to do by the time
they graduate high school. However, in response to concerns about performance in
American schools. The question arouse on
how prepare are students for College and professional careers? The National
Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO),
have written a set of standards for students in the 44 states of the United
States. These States are working to put
them into practice in 2012-2013.
Common core State standards are a set of learning that all
U.S. students should achieve, not a federal program. These standards establish
a progression of skills that students learn as they progress through the
school. Kindergarten work on phonics and letter sounds, while the work of
eighth grade is building vocabulary and reading fluency.
Being inform of these changes is very important in understanding what is happening in our schools. In the next few weeks we will focus on understanding the changes in grades K-8.

"Askkids.com is a search engine designed exclusively for young people ages 6 to 12 years. It's a free, fun way for kids and their parents to quickly and easily research school topics like science, math, geography, language arts, and history in a search environment that's safer and more age-appropriate that traditional search engines adults." (www.askkids.com)
The safety of our children on the internet is very important for Latina mothers. Perhaps do to the lack of information we assume that most search pages are safe for children under 12. This is incorrect, a simple search can take our children to pages full of information for adults or just wrong information. A search in askkids.com provides children age appropriate links for youngest in our homes.
